Making Sense of International Payroll for Companies Operating Overseas in the UAE

Sep 16, 2023 / HRM & Payroll

International Payroll for Companies

United Arab Emirates (UAE), with its booming economy and open arms for people worldwide, has become a magnet for international businesses. These businesses are spreading their wings overseas and landing in the UAE for its business-friendly policies, top-notch infrastructure, and diverse workforce. However, amidst all the excitement, there’s a maze of rules and details that companies need to navigate when managing their employees’ pay and benefits. In this article, we will break down the complexities of international payroll processing for companies making their mark in the UAE.

Cracking the Employment Code

So, you’ve hired someone new – great! In the UAE, whether you’re hiring a local or a foreign national, there’s a legal dance you need to do. A labor contract needs to be signed, and this contract gets registered with the UAE Ministry of Labor when you’re applying for the new employee’s work visa. Now, when it comes to workdays and hours, it’s a bit like a puzzle. The public sector follows a Monday-to-Friday workweek, but private companies can do their own thing. The usual workday is eight hours, up to 48 hours per week.

Figuring Out the Money Stuff

Let’s talk about that hard-earned cash. The UAE has a minimum wage, which varies depending on how much schooling your employee has. The money goes through a system known as the Wages Protection System, ensuring everyone gets what they’re owed. There’s a probation period during the first six months, like a trial run. If your employees work more than 48 hours a week, they should get extra pay – that’s only fair. And guess what? If they work on a Sunday, they get a substitute day off because Sundays are considered a rest.

Untangling the Exit Knots

But what if things don’t work out? Employees leave for various reasons, and the UAE has rules for that, too. When an employee has worked for at least a year, they’re entitled to something called severance pay if they leave. This is like a parting gift – 21 days’ pay for each year they’ve worked in the first five years and 30 days for each additional year after that, with a maximum of two years’ worth.

Wrap Your Head Around Taxes

Now, let’s chat about taxes – or the lack thereof. Unlike some places, the UAE doesn’t have an income tax for most people and companies. There’s a thing called Value-Added Tax (VAT), which is a small percentage added to certain goods and services. Employers don’t need to worry about taking out taxes from employees’ paychecks, but they do need to handle statutory pension contributions for local employees, which is 5% of their pay.

Breathing Easy with Leave

Everyone needs a break. In the UAE, employees are entitled to various kinds of leave. If someone’s been working for you for six months to a year, they get two days of paid vacation each month. Once they hit the one-year mark, it bumps up to 30 days of paid leave, plus seven paid holidays. And if someone’s feeling under the weather, they get up to 15 days of paid sick leave after three months on the job. Moms-to-be get 45 days of maternity leave after completing three months of employment.

The UAE is like a glittering treasure chest for international businesses, but it has its own set of rules and guidelines. Understanding employment contracts, pay structures, taxes, and leave regulations is key to thriving in this exciting business landscape. So, whether you’re a small startup or a big corporation, remember that mastering the ropes of international payroll for companies in the UAE can set you up for success and growth in this dynamic global market.
